Karate originated in Okinawa
exceptionally effective art of self-defense that emphasizes strategy and technique that can be employed by anyone regardless of size. It has since evolved into a “Budo” a way of self-improvement that utilizes the training of a martial art as a path to self-actualization.
Karate as self-defense...
Since perpetrators generally choose victims that they perceive as weak or inattentive (i.e. easy targets), the key to self-defense lies in the development of awareness, a confident projection of inner strength and the physical skills necessary to defeat an attack.

Karate is an excellent vehicle for developing these attributes. In addition to developing awareness and spirit, students learn to evade an attack by utilizing distance control, evasive movement, and blocking. And, if necessary, respond with powerful strikes using the hands and feet as weapons.
The ultimate goal of self-defense training is that the student carry and project themselves in such a way as to avoid danger and not be chosen as a target by a potential perpetrator.

Karate
as a path to actualization...
As a “Budo” karate is a unique method of personal self-development that challenges its participants to go beyond their current limitations. Because training the body requires disciplining the mind and forging spirit, you discover an increased ability to focus your mind and develop an indomitable sense of spirit that leads to a “never quit” attitude. In karate there is a saying “if you get knocked down seven times, get up eight”. As a result students forge a greater sense of personal strength and well being.
“Ultimately, freedom from our own self-imposed limitations is the reward of serious karate training.” Solheim Sensei
